For me, film is better. Not because it’s sharper or more advanced—quite the opposite. It’s because it isn’t. Film slows me down. Demands something of me. From the very first moment I load that roll, advance the lever, hear that subtle click of readiness… I feel connected. I feel alive.

See, when I shoot on film, there’s no tiny computer doing all the heavy lifting. No blinking lights or AI-enhanced adjustments. Just me, my camera, and the world around me. Every single decision—from aperture to shutter speed to where I place my focus—is mine. Entirely mine.

And that responsibility? That weight? I welcome it.

Developing Confidence

One of the biggest blessings of film is something folks often see as a flaw: you can’t chimp. You can’t shoot and peek at the back of the camera to see if you nailed it. There’s no instant validation. No crutch. What you get instead… is trust. Trust in your eye, in your gut, in the years you’ve spent learning this craft. You take the shot knowing—not hoping—that you got it.

That kind of confidence doesn’t come from algorithms. It comes from experience, intention, and heart.

And let me tell you, when I scan the film I’ve shot… and I pull that first image into Lightroom… there’s nothing like it. Sometimes you get a perfect shot.
