The Soul OF A Library… It had been a long time since I set foot in a library. Not just any library—but that library. The Central Library in downtown Portland, Oregon. I couldn’t tell you exactly when I was last there, but I do remember it was before I moved to Las Vegas back in 1997. That was 28 years ago. Man, let that sink in. Seems like a whole different lifetime ago.

Are Libraries Even Still a Thing?!
Back then, the internet was still in its infancy. There was no Facebook, no iPhones—just the quiet hum of real life unfolding around card catalogs, cassette tapes, and quiet whispers between the stacks. Honestly, with the world changing so fast, I wasn’t even sure if the Central Library was still open. I didn’t know if any library was still open.

But this week, I found myself back in Portland. And I had to see for myself.
Yes. It’s still there. And it’s still magnificent.
As I walked through those familiar doors, something stirred. Memories came rushing back—me, younger, flipping through records and CDs, carefully choosing what to take home and dub onto cassette tapes. Cassette tapes, man. That’s how long it had been.

The Soul of a Library
The building hasn’t lost a bit of its charm. Grand staircases, warm wooden shelves, light pouring through tall windows. It’s more than just a place that stores books—it’s a place that holds stories. Not just on the pages, but in the walls. The soul of a library, if you will.

Captured on Film
I had my Leica M6 with me, and I knew I had to capture it. Not just the architecture, but the feeling. The sense of quiet endurance. The idea that some places don’t change because they don’t need to. They just wait for us to come back.

Since I still live up in Longview, Washington, I couldn’t get a library card. But maybe—just maybe—if I find myself settling down in Portland again, I’ll get one. And I’ll return, not just for the books, but for the comfort of something timeless.

The Soul of a Library
The Central Library is still here. Still beautiful. Still breathing with the whispers of readers past and present. And as I walked back out into the Portland rain, I could almost hear a voice—smooth, steady, and familiar—saying, “Some places never leave you. Even when you leave them.”
