Lunchtime Portraits with Garrett and Rollei Retro 400s, EI 1600

November 19, 2018 By Ted

I always advocate taking a camera with you whenever you leave the house. That’s pretty easy, given the quality cameras that are on our mobile phones these days. That being said, I still prefer to take a “real” camera with me whenever possible. I went to lunch with my good friend (and great photographer and gracious model) Garrett Winslow. I’ve been testing out Rollei Retro 400s, a 400 speed black and white film these days and pushing the film to 1600. I got used to having that flexibility when pushing Kodak Tri-X to 1600; it makes it great for doing indoor, available light shots like these two portraits I made of Garrett during our lunch. I really love what this film gives me; great tones and moodiness that I love to see in my black and white photography. Great shadow tones and beautiful highlights. I think this may be my film of choice for a while.
