Happy Accidents - The Unexpected Benefit of Shooting Film

Sometimes in life, the most beautiful moments are the ones we never planned. That’s the gift—and the mystery—of film photography.

Now, I’d just loaded a fresh roll of Fujifilm ACROS into the camera. You know the kind—rich, deep blacks, and that silky smooth grain. I was simply advancing the film, getting it ready for the first real shot. No intention. No composition. Just muscle memory.

But life, as it often does, had other plans.

About a week later I was able to develop the film. Scanning the negatives of this roll of film… this unintentional shot caught my attention. I quickly dismissed it. This wasn’t something that I carefully calculated the exposure and the composition. But I kept coming back to it…

Was it a great photograph? Would it win any awards? Would it even mean anything to anyone else? Probably not. But too me… It was a beautiful memory of spending the afternoon with my daughter who was showing me her new apartment. I love this memory. Priceless.

This wasn’t a mistake. This was serendipity.

You see, film has a way of holding onto things. Light. Emotion. Accidents. Maybe that stray light snuck in while I was distracted by a breeze. Maybe the exposure was a hair off. But that’s the thing about film—it doesn’t just capture an image. It captures a moment. Honest. Imperfect. True.

And sometimes, that moment knows more than we do. That frame I didn’t mean to take? It speaks louder than some I spent hours composing. It tells a story I didn’t know I was living.

So here’s to the beautiful accidents. To the unplanned frames and the unexpected ghosts. In photography, as in life, some of the richest stories are the ones we never meant to tell.

And somehow… that makes them mean even more.
