First of all, I love my Canon 5D Mark II. It’s a beautiful and powerful tool. I’m not replacing it. (until the Mark III comes out, maybe)
However, I’ve been looking for a while now, for a good walk-around camera. Something more lightweight than the 5D, yet still substantial. Something that would be great for just keeping it with me (when possible) for spontaneous photo opportunities.
So Many Choices…
A little while ago I wrote a post about Leica. This was one line of camera I was considering, but you know what? I just simply can’t justify the costs of getting into that camera right now. Not to mention the lenses!!!!
I was also impressed by the new Olympus PEN E-P3. This is a great camera, and I almost bought it. Really the thing that stopped me was I couldn’t find one available anywhere. (for which I’m not grateful!)
Then I learned of the Fujifilm FinePix X100. This is an awesome camera! It’s been receiving great reviews from pro photographers who, for the most part, have only great things to say about this camera. It’s been getting great marks in image quality (better than the Olympus PEN E-P3).
Now the x100 has a fixed 35mm (equiv) f2 lens. Some might look at this as a minus, but to me it’s a plus. A 35mm focal length is awesome for general walk-around usage. An f2 aperture is wonderful!!! And, the fact that I can’t get hung up on getting into a whole new lens system. I’ll keep that kind of fun for my Canon. Also, being confined to one focal length makes you think differently about each shot. It draws out more photographer chops than if you could switch lenses, or zoom in or out with a nice 24-70mm.
I have to admit that one thing that really drew me to this camera is it’s retro look and feel. It’s been called the Poor Man’s Leica. I love all the manual settings controlled by external dials on the camera and lens. I’m really excited to be taking this more retro approach to just having fun with a camera.
DigitalRevTV’s Review of the X100
If I’m so excited that I’m writing this post just after I ordered the camera, just think how excited I’ll be once it actually arrives! Then when I actually head out and start taking shots! I’m predicting more posts about this camera once it arrives. Reviews, photos, and more!
How About You?
What Are You Using For Your Walk-Around Camera? I’d love to hear what you’re using and how you like it. (Especially if it’s an x100!)
