Is everyone tired of the film vs digital conversation yet? I’m sure you are. I think I am??? But I’m still going to talk about it a little bit here. And don’t worry, I’ve really come to embrace both mediums so I won’t be throwing anyone under the proverbial bus.
Been Shooting Digital (happily)
I’ve mentioned in recent videos, podcasts episodes and posts that I’ve been shooting mostly digital for the past three months, or so. I’ve been using my Leica M (typ 262), which I’ve really come to love during this time, post move.
What’s not to love? Other than being digital, I shoot with it pretty much the same way I do with my M6. I get to use the same lenses, which always amazes me; the image quality they produce consistently.
But… Back To Film
Over the past couple of weeks I’ve been able to dig out all my film developing gear and goop. Even set up my scanner, so I have been able to shoot, develop and scan film again. As much as I’ve been fine and enjoying what I’ve been photographing digitally… man, it feels so good to be shooting film again. I did miss it very much.
For the most part I’ve been doing street photography with film and digital. But then I finally did a portrait this week on Fujifilm Acros (my favorite all-time film).
Jazz Guitarist, Steve Jacobson
My friend, Steve, fantastic jazz guitarist from Chicago, was visiting family here in Washington and we were able to meet for lunch in Centralia, WA, about an hour north of Longview. Always so great to hang with this cat, man.
While we were having lunch and catching up I asked Steve if he would mind if I took a couple shots of him. I had my M6 with me with a roll of ACROS loaded. Had about 10 shots left on the roll. Steve agreed and I grabbed these two photos.
I got home that evening and developed the film. Man, once I scanned the negatives into Lightroom and saw these portraits…. I was once again praising and giving thanks to the Fujifilm film gods for creating such a beautiful film stock.
For me, this has where I have always really preferred using film – portrait shoots. It just gives me that beautiful film look that I was used to seeing while I was growing up.

This has really inspired me to start doing a lot of portrait work again. Man, just to satisfying to capture and create such beautiful imagery with someone else.
