Many, including myself, have been anxiously awaiting the debut of this new body. Exciting to see!
I remember when, a little over a year ago, I was deciding on the next camera body I would buy. For about a second and a half I went back and forth between the 5D Mark II and the 7D. The 7D is an awesome camera with newer technology than the 5D Mark II, but I was more drawn to the low light capabilities and the full frame sensor that the 5D Mark II had to offer.
I scanned the forums for any hint of when a 5D Mark III might be making the scene, but no one had a definitive answer. So I went forward with buying the 5D Mark II, a decision I’m EXTREMELY happy with! I loved that full frame beauty right out of the box and after a year the bond is even stronger. 🙂
A pretty awesome year in Major Camera Releases… And then the 5D Mark III arrives!
Although Canon’s new flagship, the 1Dx was announced not long ago, it didn’t even really make me blink. Maybe if I was a sports photographer, or had other such certain needs I would be interested. But the 5D Mark Whatever is such a powerhouse and gives you so much power in a camera, I really, for myself, can’t justify the price tag of the 1Dx.
The Logical Successor… but How About the Price?
The new updates in the Mark III seem very logical and what we probably expected to see from the 5D Mark II’s successor. It’s a beautiful camera with amazing capabilities…. but do I feel compelled to sell my 5D Mark II and make the switch? Not yet.
The 5D Mark II is still a ground breaking camera that can help one produce high-end, amazing stills and video. And, the roughly $1000 price bump of the Mark III kind of bums me out.
Maybe I’m too used to Apples method. They continue to update and move forward with their products, but their prices don’t really go up or down. You’ll pay roughly the same for your next iMac, but you’ll just get a lot more computer for the same money as you spent for your last one. Kind of wish Canon embraced this model. 🙂
To Buy or Not To Buy
I can only speak for myself, but for now I am not feeling compelled to make the jump to the 5D Mark III, and don’t even feel bad about that. I love my 5D Mark II. Maybe after I see some handson reviews, and as more time passes my lust for new gear will get the better of me me. But for now, I’m remain happy, content and reasonably un-phaseed by the new release.
However, if I didn’t have the Mark II and was looking for a full-frame body, I would jump on the new 5D Mark III in heartbeat!
